Essay about School Violence - 2038 Words
Over the past several years, an epidemic of school violence has overtaken our nation. From monthly shootings, to daily bomb threats around the country, violence is becoming more and more common in schools. It is typical to hear about acts of violence among our youth everyday on the news. Although more numerous in cities, this violence does not discriminate against inner city or suburban areas; it happens everywhere. When addressing this quick spread of crime, one can inquire as to its history and why it happens, myths about school violence, and how was can taper it, by the use of technology. This is not the case; while there are problems that are ââ¬Å"normal,â⬠sometimes they are not handled correctly or thoroughly. Often things are handled administratively but not given to law enforcements to deal with. For instance, if theft occurs in the school, the law should be involved, due to the fact that theft is against the law. However, this is not the case in a lot of school systems. Young adults then may get the notion that is ââ¬Å"okâ⬠to steal, vandalize, and be aggressive towards one another with no consequences. Sometimes, if a young adult commits a crime, there needs to be more of a consequence then simply being suspended from school. The school systems reason for not reporting crimes has to do alot with politics. The administration does not want bad publicity, or they ââ¬Å"fear fo r being blamed and not doing their job correctlyâ⬠(23). Another major reason for not reporting school-based crimes is the media. If there is violence in a school, it will be publicized in the media. In reality, the school system needs to be on the same page with the police, so they can help one another out. It Really Is That Simple By Melinda Branson - 1378 Words
ââ¬Å"It really is that simple.â⬠Melinda Bransonââ¬â¢s catch phrase signaled the end of her cooking demonstration and a roar of applause shot through the produce section. The makeshift stage presented her as some kind of superstar. Flashing a smile she held her tray of appetizers toward the crowd as if she were proudly showing off the royal baby. Her silly little cooking idea, as her boss called it six months ago, had grown into an expected Saturday feature. It added much needed extra hours to her paycheck. With another medical bill for her twin sister Christina, and Dad still recovering from Mom s unexpected death, she needed all the help she could get to keep the family afloat. Once the door prize had been announced, the crowd disappeared asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Seemed like a lot of fuss over bacon-wrapped food. Millie climbed the steps to the presentation table. Her feet ached from being in heels all morning. Her sister may have good taste in shoes, but next time she would insist on comfort and style when Christina tried talking her into a wardrobe change for the sake of image. Millie removed the navy apron, folded it over her arm and then untangled the headset from the mass of cord clipped to her pant loop. ââ¬Å"That was quite the turn out.â⬠The decidedly male voice came from behind. Fight Club Character Sketch of Jack Durden Essay Example For Students
Fight Club Character Sketch of Jack Durden Essay In the beginning of the movie our protagonist Jack starts of being a bit of a boring man and a workaholic. Heââ¬â¢s a man in his thirties, not particularly muscular, constantly looking tired and heââ¬â¢s working a lot but without much commitment. Thatââ¬â¢s one of the side effects when you, like Jack have a sleeping disorder, also called insomnia. therefor when heââ¬â¢s awake he is not attentive because of his lack of sleep. He dresses like any man with a office job with shirt and tie and is summed up not anyone you would notice if you didnââ¬â¢t know him. He has an obsession with buying things from IKEA, and his living room ends up looking like an IKEA catalogue, heââ¬â¢s identifying himself with his furnitures or his kitchen. Heââ¬â¢s in the beginning of the movie developing an addiction for going to support groups, to get some relief. He finds out that if he go to the support groups and cry he can sleep at night. Throughout the movie he also develops a second personality, that we in the movie are introduced to as Tyler Durden. In the movie we donââ¬â¢t know that Tyler and Jack are two personalities in the same person. Tyler is everything Jack wants to be but isnââ¬â¢t. While Jack is a weak and boring person who is very predictable and not able to speak for himself, Tyler is a strong, cool and masculine person, that kind that wonââ¬â¢t give up without a fight. Heââ¬â¢s a bit of a rebel, that believes that you as a person should be able to think by and for yourself. Not just following the rest of the pack like so many others. The alter ego Tyler wantââ¬â¢s to improve Jack, push his limits and become someone more like Tyler. In the movie our protagonist Jackââ¬â¢s thoughts is the speak-over. Throughout the whole movie we hear his comments and opinions on almost everything. At the end of the movie we find out that Tyler is actually not real, but an alter ego in Jacks head and that makes Tyler another way for us to see how Jack and his subconscious are thinking and feeling. Itââ¬â¢s a movie without many head characters. besides Jack there is Tyler, Jacks opposite alter ego, and a woman named Marla singers who Jack meets while going to support groups, She too is a lot different from Jack. A very straightforward person and a bit masculine and stubborn too. and then there is Bob, a man Jack meets in the support groups. Bob is not stubborn neither masculine, but heââ¬â¢s the first person in the movie that our protagonist gets just some kind of relation to. Bob is way more like Jack than Tyler or Marla, he has a much more anonymous personality and is in most situations not the one to shout out his thoughts. At the end of the movie Jack kills his alter ego after a long fight for his freedom and a life without Tyler.

Is Linda a good Wife Essay Example
Is Linda a good Wife? Paper The real meaning of good wife does not exist. People have different thoughts of how a good wife should be. For some people being a good wife means to do what a husbands wants her to do. To others a good wife means to do what she thinks it is better for her family. In the book Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller for example, Linda is Willyi s loyal wife that tries to make her husband believe on what he always wanted to get, future glory and success. At other times, she seems to be more realistic and less fragile than Willy. One way of explaining why is Linda a loyal wife is talking about how she supports her husband. Linda does that supporting her husband in doing what he thinks is success for his family. He persecutes to have success doing what society thinks best in life having a good job, earning a lot of money, have a lovely family and also attempts to make his sons, Biff and Happy, into successful people. In this case, Linda tries to make his husband feel good and support him of getting all he persecutes. On the other hand, Linda could be more realistic disagreeing her husband in some aspects and not giving him always the reason. Instead of being a loyal wife agreeing in all he says and all he thinks she is more realistic and less fragile telling him the truly life they are having, a life of lies and false hopes. In conclusion, an exact meaning of good wife can not be defined because it depends on what each person thinks. There can be a standard meaning of how a good wife should be but it is always going to be an incomplete or false definition. How do parents ruin their childrens future? The job of the parents is to expose their child to as much as possible so that the child will be able to make educated decisions, if they are unsuccessful in this endeavor, then they can ruin the future of their child. For example, in the book Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller, Willy attempted to make his sons, Biff and Happy, into successful people, unfortunately, his version of success is not the same as theirs. Willys idea of success is to do what society thinks is best. He obtains this success at the expense of his dreams. For example, at the end of the book, Willy wanted to plant carrot seeds, leading the reader to believe that he might have wanted to be a farmer rather than a salesman. On the other hand, to Biff, success is accomplishing what he wants despite everyone elses opinion. Conversely, Happy just wanted to make his father proud working as an assistant of an assistant buyer in a store. His dreams were as limited as his fathers. Obviously, Willy wanted to obtain the American Dream. He worked very hard as a salesman to earn money for his family and he, ironically, ends up cheating on his wife. He wanted Biff and Happy to be as good as he was. This backfired when Biff found out about the affair. Instead of gaining his sons respect he caused Biff to lose faith in him. Another way Willy fails as a father is that he doesnt show his sons the different opportunities and alternatives in life. It leaves Happy only one path to follow. He observes his father working hard everyday and earning very little and he thinks it is the only option in life. Maybe Happy had more potential than his father allowed. Furthermore, the most tragic affect Willy has on his sons occurs when Willy commits suicide. As a result, Biff, influenced by his fathers ideas, becomes a salesman in New York to vindicate his fathers death. Even though Biff was the only one who saw Willy for who he really was, he still decided not to follow his own dream of being a farmer. Ultimately, Willy had many negative influences on his sons. He limited what they could become by having such a narrow version of the American Dream. As a result, Biff and Happy are doomed to the life of a salesman as well.

Dworkins Distinction Between Ethics and Morality Essay
Dworkins Distinction Between Ethics and Morality - Essay Example Certainly, morals are informed by both ââ¬Å"majoritiesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"minoritiesâ⬠4 and it, therefore, makes sense that standards are set, regulated and enforced by via executive functions. For Dworkin, it is within this paradigm that the political community exists. The political community is a pivotal point of individual and collective identity. Depending on whether or not the political community is successful or not, members of the community will either perceive that the political community enhances the quality of our lives or limits it.5 According to Dworkin, morals and religions differ and conflict among groups and thus it is impossible to construct a universal legal or communal code that embodies all moral and religious ideologies and values. Thus, political communities set limits and standards for all.6 In this regard, Dworkinââ¬â¢s conceptualization of the relationship between morality and ethics explains the relationship between morality and the law in a way that is consistent with Rawlsââ¬â¢ idea of justice.7 For Rawls, justice is achieved by setting standards, but by avoiding prohibiting moral and religious beliefs that deviate from the established standards. A just society instead will tolerate the views of others.8 Similarly, Dworkin advocates for a political framework that takes a neutral stance in that it does not favor one set of religious or moral values over another.9 Rawls conceptualization of justice and the political community is more realistic than Dworkinââ¬â¢s theory. It is conceivable that a legal and/or political framework can set and enforce specific moral standards and at the same time recognize and tolerate other religious and moral standards that are different from the normative standard. This would accord with ideas of equality. Thus Rawlsââ¬â¢ theory of political liberalism makes more sense than Dworkinââ¬â¢s theory of liberal community. Dworkin advocates for a neutral framework while admitting that it is impossible to formulate a universal moral code. Arguably, in order to be neutral, the political communityââ¬â¢s framework must reflect the common values of all members of the community. The values and morals of some members of the political community will be left out since the liberal community must determine and set standards for all to follow. Therefore, Dworkinââ¬â¢s theory of liberal community is a bit contradictory. Nevertheless, Dworkin insists that law and the liberal community that informs the law is beneficial to members of the community because it formulates standards thus facilitating fairness and certainty. It also ensures that members of the community are treated equally and thus makes the community more sincere and enhances the moral rationale for the exercise of executive powers.10 The difficulty with this aspect of Dworkinââ¬â¢s reasoning, however, is that the executive may decide to treat all members of a community with equal oppression.11 In such a case, w ould the executive have a moral justification for the exercise of its powers? The answer according to Gough and Stables is found in Dworkinââ¬â¢s general assumption that the liberal community is structured around respect for rights and dignity of the members of the community.
