Over the past several years, an epidemic of school violence has overtaken our nation. From monthly shootings, to daily bomb threats around the country, violence is becoming more and more common in schools. It is typical to hear about acts of violence among our youth everyday on the news. Although more numerous in cities, this violence does not discriminate against inner city or suburban areas; it happens everywhere. When addressing this quick spread of crime, one can inquire as to its history and why it happens, myths about school violence, and how was can taper it, by the use of technology. Often things are handled administratively but not given to law enforcements to deal with. Young adults then may get the notion that is â€Å"ok† to steal, vandalize, and be aggressive towards one another with no consequences. Sometimes, if a young adult commits a crime, there needs to be more of a consequence then simply being suspended from school. The school systems reason for not reporting crimes has to do alot with politics. The administration does not want bad publicity, or they â€Å"fear fo r being blamed and not doing their job correctly† (23). Another major reason for not reporting school-based crimes is the media. If there is violence in a school, it will be publicized in the media. In reality, the school system needs to be on the same page with the police, so they can help one another out. The top five issues that are capturing the attention of the U.S. is â€Å"aggression and violent behavior, drugs, weapons, gangs, and ‘Stranger danger’† (p.5) These are the issues that have parents concerned, rather than the vandalism or the one on one fights. Fight Club Character Sketch of Jack Durden Essay In the beginning of the movie our protagonist Jack starts of being a bit of a boring man and a workaholic. He’s a man in his thirties, not particularly muscular, constantly looking tired and he’s working a lot but without much commitment. That’s one of the side effects when you, like Jack have a sleeping disorder, also called insomnia. therefor when he’s awake he is not attentive because of his lack of sleep. He dresses like any man with a office job with shirt and tie and is summed up not anyone you would notice if you didn’t know him. He has an obsession with buying things from IKEA, and his living room ends up looking like an IKEA catalogue, he’s identifying himself with his furnitures or his kitchen. He’s in the beginning of the movie developing an addiction for going to support groups, to get some relief. He finds out that if he go to the support groups and cry he can sleep at night. Throughout the movie he also develops a second personality, that we in the movie are introduced to as Tyler Durden. In the movie we don’t know that Tyler and Jack are two personalities in the same person. Tyler is everything Jack wants to be but isn’t. While Jack is a weak and boring person who is very predictable and not able to speak for himself, Tyler is a strong, cool and masculine person, that kind that won’t give up without a fight. He’s a bit of a rebel, that believes that you as a person should be able to think by and for yourself. Not just following the rest of the pack like so many others. The alter ego Tyler want’s to improve Jack, push his limits and become someone more like Tyler. In the movie our protagonist Jack’s thoughts is the speak-over. Throughout the whole movie we hear his comments and opinions on almost everything. At the end of the movie we find out that Tyler is actually not real, but an alter ego in Jacks head and that makes Tyler another way for us to see how Jack and his subconscious are thinking and feeling. It’s a movie without many head characters. besides Jack there is Tyler, Jacks opposite alter ego, and a woman named Marla singers who Jack meets while going to support groups, She too is a lot different from Jack. A very straightforward person and a bit masculine and stubborn too. and then there is Bob, a man Jack meets in the support groups. Bob is not stubborn neither masculine, but he’s the first person in the movie that our protagonist gets just some kind of relation to. Bob is way more like Jack than Tyler or Marla, he has a much more anonymous personality and is in most situations not the one to shout out his thoughts. At the end of the movie Jack kills his alter ego after a long fight for his freedom and a life without Tyler.

On the other hand, to Biff, success is accomplishing what he wants despite everyone elses opinion. Conversely, Happy just wanted to make his father proud working as an assistant of an assistant buyer in a store. His dreams were as limited as his fathers. Obviously, Willy wanted to obtain the American Dream. He worked very hard as a salesman to earn money for his family and he, ironically, ends up cheating on his wife. He wanted Biff and Happy to be as good as he was. This backfired when Biff found out about the affair. Instead of gaining his sons respect he caused Biff to lose faith in him. Another way Willy fails as a father is that he doesnt show his sons the different opportunities and alternatives in life. It leaves Happy only one path to follow. He observes his father working hard everyday and earning very little and he thinks it is the only option in life. Maybe Happy had more potential than his father allowed. Furthermore, the most tragic affect Willy has on his sons occurs when Willy commits suicide. As a result, Biff, influenced by his fathers ideas, becomes a salesman in New York to vindicate his fathers death. Even though Biff was the only one who saw Willy for who he really was, he still decided not to follow his own dream of being a farmer. Ultimately, Willy had many negative influences on his sons. He limited what they could become by having such a narrow version of the American Dream. As a result, Biff and Happy are doomed to the life of a salesman as well.
